Insurance Services

Relocating, whether domestically or overseas, can be a complex process and it’s important to consider insurance issues and services to ensure a smooth transition. Here is a comprehensive look at insurance considerations for both during and after relocation:

During the Move:

Relocation Insurance: This covers your possessions during the relocation process. It provides peace of mind by ensuring that your possessions are protected in case of damage or loss.

Types of Coverage: If you hire movers, they are generally responsible for the items they transport. However, they are required by federal law to offer two types of coverage if you are moving to a different state:

    • Full Value Protection: This is more comprehensive but more expensive. It covers the total replacement value of your lost or damaged possessions.
    • Released Value Protection: This is offered at no additional cost but provides only minimal protection. You’ll receive up to 60 cents per pound for an item.
    • Separate Liability Coverage: Some movers also offer separate liability coverage through a third-party insurance company for an additional charge.
    • Auto Insurance: If your relocation is temporary and lasts only for a week or two, you may not need a new policy. Your insurance provider will automatically adjust your plan based on the state where you are driving if you are out of the area during an accident. If you’re moving to a new state, you must notify your insurance company and purchase new coverage or update your existing policy with your new address.
After the Move:

Homeowners Insurance: When you move from one house to another, your old home insurance policy should stop as soon as you no longer own the property. The new owners will need to get their own insurance policy. When you take ownership of your new home, you should have a homeowners insurance policy in place for it.

Health Insurance: If you move within the same state, you will usually be able to keep your insurance plan – you will just need to update your health profile with your new address.

Auto Insurance: Car insurance requirements vary by state, so moving across state lines means that you need to comply with your new state’s insurance laws. Your current car insurance company might sell policies in your new state, but you will still need a new policy. After you change your car insurance, you’ll have to register your car in the state, and get a new license and plates to avoid being fined.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to discuss your specific needs with an insurance professional to ensure you have the right coverage for your relocation.
